  GENERAL KNOWLEDGE ON GI TAG   In India, GI tags are granted by the Geographical Indications Registry, which operates under the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, governs the process of granting GI tags. The first Geographical Indication (GI) tag granted in India was for Darjeeling Tea , which was awarded in 2004.
